Oh, that's what LoaderMax's SelfLoader class is for.

 

stop();
var loader:SelfLoader = new SelfLoader(this, {onProgress:progressHandler, onComplete:completeHandler});
function progressHandler(event:LoaderEvent):void {
   progressBar.scaleX = event.target.progress;
}
function completeHandler(event:LoaderEvent):void {
   play();
}

 

This assumes you have a progressBar Sprite/MovieClip that you want scaled up to 100%, but change the progressHandler code to whatever you need.
