Is this possible with GSAP?

Hello everyone my first post here, I have limited experience of GSAP and would like to learn more.

 

I understand I can animate text on a path with GSAP and create a marquee, but is it possible to do the mockup below (the screenshot attached) where marquee text and its background colour can "bridge" over itself, without the text clashing, if you know what I mean?

 

I did play around with the codepen demo below, , I can modify the path but I cannot figure out how to bridge the text along with the background so there is a bridge and not a clash of words with no background.

 

PS (I am not asking or expecting a solution, I just would like to know if anyone knows if it is possible before I tear my hair out trying for a week!)
