State change and matchMedia (React)

Hi all!

I'm having trouble conceptualizing a workaround here. In my menu component, I have a menu icon using State to trigger the animation, but that's hidden my menu entirely on desktop. It seems difficult to solve for the discrepancy in State with mobile/desktop, but I also can't seem to nail the usage of matchMedia because no matter what, the State is still initially falsey. This feels overcomplicated, so hoping I'm just not seeing an easy answer!

Thanks,

Connor

It's pretty tough to troubleshoot without a minimal demo - the issue could be caused by CSS, markup, a third party library, your browser, an external script that's totally unrelated to GSAP, etc. Would you please provide a very simple CodePen or CodeSandbox that demonstrates the issue?

Please don't include your whole project. Just some colored <div> elements and the GSAP code is best (avoid frameworks if possible). See if you can recreate the issue with as few dependancies as possible. If not, incrementally add code bit by bit until it breaks. Usually people solve their own issues during this process! If not, then at least we have a reduced test case which greatly increases your chances of getting a relevant answer.

Here's a starter CodePen that loads all the plugins. Just click "fork" at the bottom right and make your minimal demo

If you're using something like React/Next/Nuxt/Gatsby or some other framework, you may find CodeSandbox easier to use.

Once we see an isolated demo, we'll do our best to jump in and help with your GSAP-specific questions.

The problem was always clear to me, while it was caused by using GSAP, it's more of a React conditional state management issue.

But I solved it! So FWIW I'll leave the solution here because I'm certain someone else will run into this.

My GSAP timeline was stuck on the initial value of 'display:none' in the 'fromTo' Tween which was intentional on mobile but problematic on desktop because the menu is a dropdown on mobile but always visible on desktop. The issue couldn't be solved with matchMedia, so instead I needed to read the screen innerWidth as a media query to manage the state of the GSAP timeline. Here's the solution:

const [menuOpen, setMenuOpen] = useState(window.innerWidth > 900 ? true : false);
